Company Information
Turnpike was formed in 1999 by a small group of engineers and product managers brought together while working through an ISO certification for a small trucking company. As the group worked to complete the required ISO certification process, they were amazed by the amount of paperwork required for the trucking company to operate. They learned that the truck drivers were required to keep paper mileage and fuel reports for each mile that they drove through each state or province and for each fuel purchase. Upon their return, the drivers would then turn in their mileage reports and fuel receipts to the accounting department, who would then compile the mileage and fuel reports for their IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) filings. Companies are often audited on these reports and, if the reports are not 100% accurate, could potentially face significant penalties. In addition, over-the-road drivers are also required to keep Records of Duty Status logs. These logs contain each driver's activity for the previous 7 days. Among other requirements, Section 395.15 of the FMCSA regulations states that each driver may only drive for 11 consecutive hours or work for 14 consecutive hours before a rest period. There are multiple components to the IFTA filing and Driver Logs requirements but it was obvious to the group that any paperwork reduction could greatly increase each company's operational efficiency.
After developing the RouteTracker, a device that combined GPS information with Engine Diagnostics, the group was faced with another challenge. While the company experienced success selling the RouteTracker at a $600 price point, they found that although the device could produce dramatic cost savings, many companies could not pay the upfront hardware costs required to install the device. Early in 2007, Turnpike eliminated the upfront hardware cost and began using a monthly service fee model for their services. The new pricing model allowed companies of all sizes to implement the system and realize the benefits immediately.
The RouteTracker device is unique in that it does not contain an embedded modem. Most On-Board Fleet Management systems utilize a built in cellular modem or satellite system to communicate data. Turnpike's engineers decided early in the development process to implement Bluetooth as their wireless communication tool and eliminate the additional cost of a built-in modem. RouteTracker leverages the technology of cellular phones or handheld devices to communicate GPS and Engine Diagnostic information via Bluetooth to their completely web based application, Turnpike Direct.
Today, Turnpike has over 20,000 vehicles utilizing the system. Small and large fleets employ reporting tools that include: fuel efficiency monitoring, driver safety scorecards, engine diagnostics, GPS reporting, 395.15 compliant Hours of Service (HOS) driver logs, speed, hard brake events, odometer readings, payroll verification, customer delivery monitoring, and complete IFTA automation.
